Very few people realise how important it is to sit correctly when driving. Even professional drivers often "lie down" when driving and are unable to brake with full force in an emergency.
Sitting correctly is particularly important for longer journeys, not only for optimum safety but also for relaxed driving. If you sit incorrectly, your muscles tense up and you tire more quickly.
This is the right way to sit when driving:
- The arms must be slightly bent, so do not push the seat too far back and do not stretch your arms under any circumstances. If you sit too far away from the steering wheel and pedals, you will not be able to steer and change gear optimally.
- The other extreme is to sit bent over the steering wheel with the tip of your nose against the windscreen. This means you can't see enough to the sides and your body is cramped.
- The correct adjustment of the headrest is usually underestimated. The height is crucial. If the headrest is too low, car accidents can result in dangerous cervical vertebrae injuries. The upper edge of the headrest must be flush with the head end.
- Most people now realise how important seat belts are for safety when driving. However, seat belts are often not adjusted tightly enough. When fastening the seat belt, tighten it again until it fits snugly against the body.
- Finally, of course, you have to make sure that the mirrors are aligned so that you have an optimum viewing angle. So if you have adjusted the seat to adopt a correct seating position, make sure that you can see everything that is happening to the right, left and behind the car.
