Do you save money on fuel with hybrid vehicles?

Cars on the road

Hybrid vehicles are cars whose engines use more than one fuel source. The most common type of hybrid car uses a combination of electric motor and combustion engine and is particularly economical.

Hybrid cars generally cover more kilometres with the same amount of fuel than conventional cars with only a combustion engine. The economy of hybrid cars can lead to considerable financial savings on petrol or diesel. A hybrid Jetta TDI instead of a normal Jetta SE would save around €3000 over 5 years if diesel prices remained the same.

However, you have to bear in mind that the purchase costs of a hybrid vehicle are currently still significantly higher than a car with a combustion engine. So despite the considerable fuel savings, you don't necessarily save money overall with a hybrid vehicle. Frequent drivers may be able to save a lot of money with a hybrid car, but short-distance drivers may end up paying more.
