Basic rules for the management of household money

Household money

If you want to improve your financial situation permanently, you shouldn't wait for a pay rise. To manage your household money better, you can do a few things yourself if you follow a few basic rules so that you don't end up in a financial crisis when an unexpected repair is due.

Financial regulation

Keep a record of how much money you take in and how much you spend each month. For expenses, start with the necessary bills (rent, electricity, water, heating, car, insurance, bank charges, etc.). From what is left over, you can plan what you can influence yourself. For example, you can regulate the purchase of food and clothes yourself and, if necessary, keep them to a minimum. Don't spend everything on hobbies and entertainment, but set aside a financial cushion.

Saving

Even if your job seems secure at the moment, you should make provisions for emergencies. It is best to have a savings account that covers three months of monthly expenses. To build up a nest egg, you may have to do without little extras once in a while. Invest the money for the long term so that you are not tempted to go for unnecessary expenses in between. Think carefully about which luxuries in your life you can and cannot afford.

Set financial goals

Set financial goals. This is the most effective way to control unnecessary extra spending. If you have a specific goal in mind, you are more likely to put money aside. Set a goal for how much money you need and when you want to reach it. Divide the total by the number of months and set aside that much each month until you reach the goal. When you have reached a goal, set a new one. Plan ahead for the long term, if possible.
