Here are some tips for frugal grocery shopping:

Shopping list

Think about what you want to cook for the coming week and make a shopping list. A list is important when shopping on a budget, because you won't be tempted to buy superfluous items. Include in your list any food you may already have in the fridge. To make it easier, you can make an inventory of your freezer and food cupboard.

Include in your shopping list foods that are on sale this week and buy them instead of regular priced foods.

stick to your shopping list and don't make impulse purchases!

Buy in bulk

Buying larger quantities of an item, especially when it's on sale, can save you money in the future. Of course, pay attention to the best-before date. Many foods can be used in countless different dishes, reducing the cost per meal.

Maybe buy in bulk with neighbours or friends and share the cost.

Seasonal fruit and vegetables

Fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables are always cheaper, especially if they did not have to be imported. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables that are in season, if possible.

Less meat, more vegetables and eggs

Meat can be expensive. To get enough protein, buy more eggs, beans and nuts.

Purchase by order

Write your shopping list in the order you find the items in the supermarket. This way you don't have to make unnecessary extra trips and are less tempted to add items to your basket that you happen to pass.

No ready meal

Ready meals and snacks are more expensive. Buy the ingredients separately and make your own food. Instead of a ready-made snack for in between meals, you can make a juicy sandwich from the food you buy anyway.

Search for alternatives

Don't buy the branded items, but look for equivalent private label items. Often this means looking a little further down, as the more expensive products are often conveniently located at eye level.

The key to frugal yet varied and healthy food is creativity. With a little imagination, you can always create new dishes with similar ingredients.
