fresh bread

How do you test whether bread is fresh?

fresh bread

Bread that you buy in the supermarket is not always completely fresh, often it has already been on the shelf for several days and no longer tastes good after just a few days. It is good if you can check how fresh the bread is when you buy it.

Fresh bread should be soft and quickly regain its shape when pressed. Bread with a hard crust should also give way when you press it lightly with your fingers. Wholemeal or multigrain bread feels slightly firmer overall than white bread, as it has a higher density.

Of course, it makes sense to check the expiry date of the bread. Good bread should keep for at least 5 days when you buy it.

Bread from the bakery is usually baked fresh every morning, bread from the previous day is often offered at a reduced price and should be visibly labelled.

Tip: Bread should not be stored in the fridge as it ages more quickly there.
