Vegans abstain from animal products of any kind. In addition to meat, fish and poultry, this also includes milk and dairy products, eggs and honey. People who are used to a "normal" diet often cannot imagine what is left for vegans to eat and believe that they only eat salads. Here you can find out just how varied a vegan's diet actually is.
All types of fruit and vegetables are at the bottom of the vegan food pyramid. Fruit and vegetables can be eaten indefinitely. It is also important to realise that there is much more than carrots, lettuce, apples and bananas. The wide range of vegetables consists of leafy plants, fruits (e.g. pumpkin, tomato and avocado), flowering vegetables (broccoli, artichoke), stalk vegetables, root vegetables and sea vegetables (seaweed, sea grapes) and results in a selection of around 80 different varieties.
One step above, in the category of foods that can be eaten generously, there are wholemeal products such as bread, rice and pasta as well as cereals such as wheat bran, oatmeal, spelt and maize.
Dairy substitutes such as soya milk, soya yoghurt, tofu, Quorn, almond milk and coconut milk are eaten in large quantities. In the group of seeds, nuts and pulses, there is a choice of several dozen different varieties, namely all kinds of nuts, beans, peas and grains. This also includes ready-made products made from them, such as peanut butter or popcorn.
At the top of the pyramid are vegetable fats and oils, spices and sweets, which are used sparingly.
Of course, a vegan can also drink lemonades and similar soft drinks in addition to teas, coffee, fruit juices and water.
