The good resolution is the first step. You resolve to go on a diet to fit back into your bikini. But even if you stick to the diet and actually lose weight, the success usually doesn't last. After a short period of time, the pounds start to pile back on as soon as the diet is over. Diets are preprogrammed for failure, what you need to change is your inner attitude towards food.
The biggest problem lies in the word "diet" itself. The very expression "I am on a diet" implies a temporary change in diet and almost directly excludes an idealised long-term dietary adjustment.
It may sound frightening at first glance to change your attitude to food permanently, but this is the only way to maintain your desired weight and not put it back on immediately after the diet.
Instead of saying "I'm on a diet" you should say "I make sure I eat a balanced diet".
People also underestimate the role that habit and addiction play in our diet. Regular and excessive intake of too much sugar makes us crave sweets more and more. Eating highly sugary and fatty foods changes the receptors in the brain and leads to addictive behaviour. You experience positive sensations after eating these habitual unhealthy foods and do not get the same satisfaction from other, less sugary and fatty foods.
If you don't realise your addiction to junk food before you go on a diet, you won't be able to counteract the irritability and cravings for fat and sugar caused by withdrawal symptoms. If you prepare yourself for this temporary dissatisfaction before switching to a healthy diet, you will be in a better position to overcome it and free yourself from your addiction in the long term.
Another problem with conventional diets is black and white thinking. It is a mistake to drastically change your diet to only healthy and whole foods. In order to adapt your diet to a lower calorie intake in the long term, you need to gradually change your body and your thinking. It doesn't help to switch from junk food to raw food for four weeks and then go back to what you're used to. You need to learn to find satisfaction in foods that are lower in fat and sugar.
