Kefir for lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is a relatively common problem caused by a lack of the enzyme lactase, which the body needs to process lactose (milk sugar). Flatulence, bloating and diarrhoea are the most common symptoms.

While some people who suffer from lactose intolerance can tolerate small amounts of dairy products, others have to avoid them altogether.

Kefir, an alternative to milk, contains many bacteria that promote the digestion of lactose. Extensive studies have shown that kefir is very well tolerated by people with lactose intolerance. Due to its high content of calcium, potassium and protein, kefir should be included in the diet of a lactose intolerant person instead of yoghurt.

It is recommended to drink kefir in the morning on an empty stomach, when it is most easily absorbed by the body.
