Many German students go abroad for at least a year as exchange students or enrol at universities. In order to make the stay in a foreign country as smooth as possible, the student should be well prepared. This applies not only to knowledge of the local language, but also to the paperwork and daily life in the new country.
How should you prepare for a study abroad programme?

You should consider the following for your plan:

• Start preparing in good time, preferably a year in advance.
• Find out about the country's school system and choose the right school.
• The choice of country depends to a large extent on your knowledge of the local language, which is absolutely essential. If necessary, you should improve your language skills beforehand.
• Find out about any financial support you may be entitled to for the duration of your studies. As a foreign student, you are often entitled to financial aid or even a scholarship. You must apply for this in good time. As an exchange student, there are usually fewer costs for your studies and you will be supported in your preparation, but places are limited.
• Find out about the application process for the teaching institute of your choice.
  Plan your journey to your new city by plane, train or other means.
• Find a flat that is easily accessible from the university.
• Find out about visas and how much money you are allowed to earn alongside your studies.
• Find out about the rules of daily life and the work situation. This applies to both the laws of the country and the school's internal regulations. You can usually find the information you need on the institute's website.
• Try to learn to understand the new culture so that you don't make any faux pas.
• If possible, be clear about the goal of your desired training programme. It is better to know in advance what you can expect from the training programme and what opportunities are available once you have successfully completed it.
• Most students return to their home country after completing their training or finishing their school year. In most cases, you have to get used to it again, because you change more than you think during your stay abroad. You are moulded by your new experiences. The friends you left behind in your home country do not share this experience and also need a transition period to welcome you back into their old circle.
