How to cut toenails correctly

Cutting toenails

Cutting toenails sounds easy, but if they are cut incorrectly, ingrown nails and inflammation can result. Toenails are too long if they feel uncomfortable in shoes. How often toenails need to be cut depends on how quickly the nails grow back; it is more important that the correct technique is used when cutting.

To cut toenails, it is best to use a large nail clipper that is specially designed for toenails. Toenails are larger and thicker than fingernails, so the right nail clippers make cutting much easier. A good nail clipper gives a clean cut made with equal pressure from two blades.

Before each cutting of the toenails, the nail clippers should be disinfected with alcohol to prevent bacteria from entering the nail bed, which can cause nail fungus. To do this, briefly rub the clipper with cotton wool dabbed in alcohol.

It is best to sit on the floor or on a hard chair in a well-lit room while cutting. The respective foot is held in one hand, the nail clipper in the other.

The toenail is clipped straight from side to side with several small cuts. The sides of the nail should not be rounded, otherwise they can more easily press into the skin and grow in. Toenails should be square and not too short so as not to cause inflammation in the nail bed.

After cutting, smooth the nail with a nail file. File in one direction to avoid fraying the nail.

Clean the nail file and nail clippers again with alcohol after use.

Dry toenails can be cut better and cleaner than nails soaked by bathing. If the nails are too soft, they can easily bend or tear.

People who are very short-sighted, overweight or pregnant should have their toenails cut by someone else.
