How useful is health insurance for animals

Insurance for pets

Pet health insurance protects pet owners from high vet bills in the event of a sudden illness in their pet. As with any other insurance, however, it often happens that the pet owner pays in for years without ever needing a vet.

Most pet insurers only insure animals under a certain age without a previous medical history. This prevents animals already in need of treatment from being insured and the insurance company only paying out. An insurance policy can only work and keep monthly premiums low if a high percentage of its customers rarely or never make claims.

Before deciding for or against pet health insurance, you should find out exactly what is covered by the insurance and what is not. If the insurance premiums are low enough, the pet owner can save a lot of money in the event of an accident or illness. X-rays, expensive medical treatment, operations and hospitalisation can quickly add up to hundreds or even thousands of euros.

The pet owner should find out about the payment and reimbursement conditions of the health insurance. Some insurers require the pet owner to make an advance payment.
