Ideally, a cat can learn to go to the bathroom like a human and do its business in the toilet. Depending on the litter tray system, it can even learn to relieve itself afterwards. This means you no longer need to set up a litter tray and there is no odour nuisance.
However, it is very challenging to get a cat to go to the litter tray. Start by placing the litter tray right next to the toilet in the bathroom. You can gradually adjust the height of the litter tray to that of the human toilet, for example with old telephone directories. However, give the cat time to adjust and get used to each change. Try not to change the height too much at once. Above a certain height, you will probably need to place a stool or crate next to it to make it easier for the cat to enter its litter tray.
If the cat is used to its litter tray being at the same height as the human litter tray, you can buy a special attachment as a transition that allows the litter tray to be placed on top of the toilet bowl. For this purpose, there is also cat litter that is suitable for flushing. Gradually, you can use less and less cat litter until the cat has got used to not using litter at all. Now the time has come when you can remove the litter tray completely.
If the toilet flush is easy to operate with a cat's paw, you can now start to show your cat how to press it after doing his business. Not all cats can be trained to do this, but it is worth the patience and effort to try.
