It can be beneficial for dogs to have a dog crate or dog box, as they give the dog a sense of security. A well-ventilated, clean dog crate can be helpful for dog training, transporting the dog in the car or during recovery after an illness or operation. A dog crate helps anxious dogs and gives them a safe haven.

The right size of dog crate is one of the most important decisions. The dog crate should be big enough for the dog to stand upright and turn around in, but not so big that it can jump. Despite the dog's sense of security, it should not spend more than eight hours at a time in its crate. Longer periods without a break can lead to urinary tract problems, constipation and behavioural problems. During the training of the dog, the dog should only remain in the crate for short periods at a time. Puppies must be taken out every hour to urinate.

A comfortable dog crate is like a cave for the animal. In the wild, dogs retreat into cave-like shelters to feel safe. For nervous, anxious dogs, a dog crate is a safe place, provided it is in the right place. While the dog is in its crate, it should still be part of the family, so the crate should be in the normal living area where it can hear its humans. If the dog is allowed to get used to its dog crate properly, it will quickly accept it as a place to sleep. Under no circumstances should the dog crate be used as a punishment for bad behaviour.

A dog crate is often very useful when training puppies. Puppies under six months of age are not yet able to contain their urine and go everywhere. If they are introduced to a dog crate at a young age, many puppies learn to be house-trained more quickly, as they naturally don't want to fill up their sleeping area.
Once a dog has accepted its dog crate, it is usually happy to be locked up in it for a short time when its owner leaves the house. This reduces the risk of accidents for a young dog.

A dog crate is highly recommended for safety on longer car journeys. The crate should be padded and strapped down.

After surgery or illness, a dog crate is a safe place during recovery, as the dog's freedom of movement is restricted. In general, a dog should be in its dog crate for at least 24 hours to recover after an operation. Vets often recommend a longer period. How long a sick or recently operated dog should stay in the dog crate is determined by the vet on a case-by-case basis.
