Cholesterol is a molecule from which vitamin D, bile acid and steroid hormones are formed. Cholesterol is an important component of cell walls. It is partly produced by the body itself and partly absorbed through food.
Causes of high cholesterol
High cholesterol levels are caused or exacerbated by external factors such as an unhealthy and high-fat diet, obesity and lack of exercise. However, the predisposition to high cholesterol is partly inherited. If the cholesterol level is too high from birth, this can only be attributed to genes. In people with a predisposition to high cholesterol, cholesterol levels can rise due to an incorrect and high-fat diet.
