1. Vielleicht. Übersetzung: Wahrscheinlich gebe ich dir, […]

Even if every generation of parents is fundamentally different from the last, all parents are the same in one respect: there are certain expressions that all parents seem to use towards their (young) children. These expressions are probably often used to avoid having to say what they actually mean.

Fathers and mothers are exposed to a great deal of stress over the years as they guide their children through life. Parents need to consciously relax in between, otherwise their nerves will no longer be able to cope.

Parents with too much nervous tension are not able to devote themselves 100 per cent to their family when they need to, and their mental, emotional and physical health will pay a high price if they do not learn to relax in time.

It's great if both parents can give each other a neck and shoulder massage when they realise that they are stressed. If this is not possible, self-massage can also help. In particular, you should concentrate on the areas that are noticeably tense, such as the neck, shoulders and back. This is not just about relaxing the muscles, the massage movements calm the nervous system and release the happiness hormone oxytocin in the brain.

A walk in the fresh air does wonders every now and then. If the children are busy, walk through the park for a quarter of an hour and consciously take in the scents of the environment. Alternatively, it's also good to sit on the balcony and literally shut out noise and stress for a few minutes.

The greater the stress, the more problems you can have falling asleep. It is therefore advisable to listen to meditative and relaxing music half an hour before going to bed to calm your nerves. Sit comfortably on the sofa and soak up the music with your eyes closed.

Daily exercise is necessary to relax the nerves and muscles. It doesn't have to be a power sport, the important thing is to exercise regularly and have fun. Take a short bike ride and leave the car at home.

If you have the feeling that everything is just getting too much and you are losing track, it helps to plan your duties and prioritise them in good time and for the long term. Less important things can often be eliminated or postponed. If you make a list of tasks that need to be completed the evening before, prioritised according to importance, you can structure your day and approach it in a calmer and more relaxed manner.

Don't just think about the children when it comes to good nutrition! Just because you have to eat quickly doesn't mean you should eat less good food for yourself. The body can cope better with stress if it gets the nutrients it needs.

Breathing exercises are a useful and effective method to combat acute stress. If the children are driving you up the wall again, take a deep breath and make sure you breathe out for a long time, breathe in for 4 seconds, breathe out for 7 seconds and repeat several times. The brain releases mechanisms to calm the nerves through the consciously prolonged exhalation.

Children grow out of their toys. While parents would like to get rid of toys that have been unused for years to make room for new things that are appropriate for the child's age, children are emotionally attached to their old playmates and are rarely willing to part with them. It is wrong to simply take away a child's toys; they must be willing to part with something themselves and voluntarily.

Depending on how old and mature the child is, you can talk to them about donations. The thought that their toys will live on and bring joy to another child helps many children with the separation. In any case, parents should be honest with the child and talk openly about their feelings and thoughts. The idea of giving the old teddy bear to a child who doesn't have one usually works well, as it gives the child a positive feeling about the separation by making someone else happy.

Parents should not ask a child to drastically part with everything they have not used for years. Instead, they can give the child the opportunity to choose a certain number of toys from all their toys that they want to part with.

For parents, it often just looks as if some toys have gone unnoticed for years. You shouldn't make the mistake of giving things away behind the child's back, because at some point the child will remember the things they thought they had forgotten and justifiably feel betrayed.

If a child does not want to give up certain toys under any circumstances, they should not be forced to do so. It is better to let some time pass until the child makes the decision themselves.

Nothing works better than a good example. Parents should therefore hand in their own unused items and ideally let the child take part in the process. If the parents have piles of things lying around, the child cannot be expected to sort out their toys.

Sorting out toys to give away shouldn't be a funeral. On the contrary, it can be really fun! The moment tears start to flow or you become frustrated as a parent, it's time to take a break or postpone the endeavour to another day. Also, if your child bursts into tears at the thought of parting with a particular toy, remember that they are not yet of the age to do so. Many children don't play with their things for a long time and rediscover them years later.

Never put the child under any pressure when it comes to making such decisions. This also means that the child should take the time it needs to ensure that the separation is voluntary.

A good option is to tell your child shortly before Christmas that they should make room for new toys. The prospect of new things makes it easier for many children to decide to part with old toys.

It is also best not to give away the selected toys immediately, but to store them in a box for the time being in case the child suddenly changes its mind. Perhaps picking out the unused toys has led to a new discovery and the child now wants to play with them again.

Donations and gifts give a good feeling. The child should therefore feel proud and appreciated when they have made another child happy. However, nothing is nicer than hearing from your own parents that they are proud of their child.

Unfortunately, childless couples are often criticised. Regardless of the reasons why someone doesn't have children, people form unquestioned opinions about this fact. What are the most common misconceptions about childless couples?

1. childless people don't like children

The choice not to have children of your own has nothing to do with a lack of affection. It is perfectly possible to enjoy the closeness and affection of children without being a parent yourself. Many primary school teachers and educators have deliberately chosen this profession in order to work with children on a daily basis and build relationships with them, but have no interest in having a family of their own. In fact, it is often the case that childless people react more understandingly to a nagging child than other parents, because they do not know the constant strain of dealing with these children and can therefore be more tolerant.

2. childless women secretly want children of their own

Women who want children of their own, even if they don't have any, usually talk openly about it. When couples decide not to have children, they have their reasons. It is actually quite impertinent to misinterpret the satisfaction of a childless person as a suppressed desire to have children.

3. childless adults are selfish

Childless people are less time-bound because they don't have to look after their children. Quite a few of them therefore spend a lot of their free time doing voluntary work or helping out family and friends. So there is no question of selfishness. Those who are childless and selfish would probably have remained selfish even with children.

4. childless women are less reliable than mothers

According to this cliché, working mothers are used to multitasking and manage their working hours expertly, while the childless woman likes to put her feet up and cure her hangover after another long night of partying. If you look at individual cases from your own environment, you quickly realise that this cliché is not true. There are lazy and hard-working mothers as well as unreliable and responsible childless people.

The basis for a happy family life is a calm environment at home. When several people live together, stress inevitably builds up, disturbing the peace in the household and creating bad tension. But you can do something about it yourself: you can reduce stress in the home by bringing household members together and, above all, communicating openly.

Talking openly with family members is the most important step towards solving a problem and reducing tension. If there are problems that are causing stress in the house, talk about them openly without accusing each other. Try to find a solution together and be prepared to compromise. Avoid reacting negatively and defensively to the opinions of others and try to understand their perspective.

But it's not only important to talk to each other in stressful situations. Show an interest in the daily experiences of your family members and talk to them about your own.

If there is tension among household members, try to find a shared activity that everyone enjoys. Find opportunities to get out of the house at the weekend to go to the zoo, swimming pool or somewhere else. Getting physically active is the best outlet for pent-up stress.

Find the cause of constant stress triggers together and work out a plan to avoid them as far as possible in future. A common stress trigger within the family is that household chores are unevenly distributed. Make sure that everyone does their bit and that you help each other.

Try to remain positive despite the stress and observe whether the stress in the family decreases. If your efforts have not improved anything, look deeper into the problems and talk about them openly with the others.

Praise is important. A child seeks recognition for an achievement and their self-image depends heavily on their parents' assessment. However, it is important not to overdo the praise, otherwise the child's self-esteem will be weakened.

When a child draws a picture, as a parent you feel obliged to praise the picture because you want to build up the child's self-confidence. This is all well and good, but excessive praise can have a detrimental effect on the child's self-esteem.

The worse the child's picture is or the more insecure the child is when shown the picture, the more parents tend to praise it excessively. Instead of saying "that's a beautiful picture", they say "that's the most beautiful picture I've ever seen".

Studies show that such excessive praise can affect a child's self-confidence. Children seem to instinctively sense that their parents are exaggerating in order to cover up the poor quality of their picture.

The motto for parents and carers is: less is more. Simple praise makes the children feel good and boosts their self-confidence; excessive praise backfires.

One in five children is born with a predisposition to shyness. However, not every one of them develops into a shy child; a lot depends on the child's immediate environment. It is important for parents to provide the right support for a shy child so that they do not develop a complex about their shyness as a result of teasing and humiliation, but learn to recognise it as a normal character trait.

Grandparents are irreplaceable in the lives of children and also give parents a well-deserved break from time to time. Even though older generations obviously have experience of bringing up children, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are up to date when it comes to safety.

Knotting and tying shoelaces is a challenge for many children. Tying shoes independently requires dexterity and the cognitive ability to remember the individual steps. How do you help your child to tie their shoes themselves?

It makes little sense to start the learning process before the child is 4 or 5 years old. Girls usually master tying shoelaces better than boys at around the age of 6. Boys need longer and can only do it at the age of 7.

As a parent, you often have to show children how to tie their shoelaces. It is important to demonstrate it from the child's perspective. So sit behind the child and reach through their arms. It is best to place a shoe lace on the table, as it is much more difficult at the beginning to tie the laces on your own foot in a bent position.

The toe of the shoe is placed away from the body so that the child sees it from the same perspective as later on the foot.

Of course, it only makes sense to show the binding as long as the child is interested and watching.

The shoe tying process must be divided into individual steps so that the child can follow the process. This also makes it easier to remember afterwards. After a few demonstrations, practise together with the child. Each step should be commented on. If the joint tying works, let the child try it alone and give them the same verbal instructions as before.

Once the child has understood the process, all that remains is to practise until the process becomes automatic.

Children do not yet have their emotions under control. Sometimes it's little things that trigger a tantrum in children that seemingly can't be controlled by anything. Here are some tips for managing aggression when your child throws a tantrum.
